Dear Craigslist Poster,

This is Craig Newmark. I'm the founder of Craigslist. We have been working with Apple Inc on new promotional giveaways. Basically we are giving away free iPads and other Apple products to randomly picked Craigslist posters. You have been picked as our winner for today. Your Craigslist post id came up in our random pick. You have won a free iPad!!! Please visit our promotional page here and follow the directions to get your free iPad. This is not a scam. After following the directions on our promotional page we will ship you an iPad within 3-4 business days.

Congratulations on winning an Apple iPad (currently valued at $829). If you have any concerns or questions you can contact me by replying to this email. Before contacting me I recommend that you visit our promo page here and sign up for your free iPad so we can reserver one for you.

Thank you for posting on Craigslist,

Craig Newmark

I just got this same email for a business post I'd put up. I don't know how to check if these things are fake or not. How did you find out? (Aside from it being highly unbelieveable in the first place...)

So wierd that I found your blog about the same article I just received from Craigslist for a free Ipad. Do you truly believe that this is a scam? I'm actually very curious!

I got the email too 1/27 and I believe it is a scam cause it has a typo on the email. A professional like the founder of CL wouldn't send out an email with typos. See the word reserver -- should be reserve.

I got the same email. I went to the site and entered in a fake email address and that email address was a winner. What are the odds. All I had to do was enter in my mailing address. So now I have an ipad coming in the mail. Woo-hoo!

I'm going out to get some lotto tickets.

If you had a fake email account and then entered your real mailing address, do you think they got the information that they wanted? Keep us posted to see what happens.....

Got the same free offer in response to a rental ad that I posted. Craigslist ought to go after this guy for impersonating their founder.

Just received the same email this morning. Wish it was real but 99% sure it is a scam. Anybody else get the message at the bottom to unsubscribe? The email was apparently put out by a Simons communications in CA.

As others have said, when a free iPad is being offered, I have to question the authenticity. The name on the email address, the fact that it was a live.com address, it may have been a different address, with the text showing it as a live.com address (I don't remember).

It is definitly a scam, i did not get an email, i just went to craigslist and it forwarded me to another site that said i won, so i did their survery, and it gave me an "ipad" and gave me choice of color. They do not have pink and orange and green Ipads. Definitly a scam.
